TMT 170: Genesis 4:26 – 6:4 (+Sefer Chanoch)

4:26And to Seth also a son was born, and he called him Enosh.

At that time men began to call upon the name of the LORD.

5
1This is the book of the generations of Adam. In the day that God created man, He made him in His own likeness. 2Male and female He created them, and He blessed them. And in the day they were created, He called them “man.”b

3When Adam was 130 years old, he had a son in his own likeness, after his own image; and he named him Seth. 4And after he had become the father of Seth, Adam lived 800 years and had other sons and daughters. 5So Adam lived a total of 930 years, and then he died.

6When Seth was 105 years old, he became the father of Enosh. 7And after he had become the father of Enosh, Seth lived 807 years and had other sons and daughters. 8So Seth lived a total of 912 years, and then he died.

9When Enosh was 90 years old, he became the father of Kenan. 10And after he had become the father of Kenan, Enosh lived 815 years and had other sons and daughters. 11So Enosh lived a total of 905 years, and then he died.

12When Kenan was 70 years old, he became the father of Mahalaleel. 13And after he had become the father of Mahalaleel, Kenan lived 840 years and had other sons and daughters. 14So Kenan lived a total of 910 years, and then he died.

15When Mahalaleel was 65 years old, he became the father of Jared. 16And after he had become the father of Jared, Mahalaleel lived 830 years and had other sons and daughters. 17So Mahalaleel lived a total of 895 years, and then he died.

18When Jared was 162 years old, he became the father of Enoch. 19And after he had become the father of Enoch, Jared lived 800 years and had other sons and daughters. 20So Jared lived a total of 962 years, and then he died.

21When Enoch was 65 years old, he became the father of Methuselah. 22And after he had become the father of Methuselah, Enoch walked with Godc 300 years and had other sons and daughters. 23So Enoch lived a total of 365 years.

24Enoch walked with God, and then he was no more, because God had taken him away.

25When Methuselah was 187 years old, he became the father of Lamech. 26And after he had become the father of Lamech, Methuselah lived 782 years and had other sons and daughters. 27So Methuselah lived a total of 969 years, and then he died.

28When Lamech was 182 years old, he had a son. 29And he named him Noah,e saying, “May this one comfort us in the labor and toil of our hands caused by the ground that the LORD has cursed.” 30And after he had become the father of Noah, Lamech lived 595 years and had other sons and daughters. 31So Lamech lived a total of 777 years, and then he died.

32After Noah was 500 years old, he became the father of Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

6
1Now when men began to multiply on the face of the earth and daughters were born to them, 2the sons of God saw that the daughters of men were beautiful, and they took as wives whomever they chose.

3So the LORD said, “My Spirit will not contend with man forever,a for he is mortal; his days shall be 120 years.”

4The Nephilim were on the earth in those days—and afterward as well—when the sons of God had relations with the daughters of men. And they bore them children who became the mighty men of old, men of renown.

I just listened to episode 123, 42 minutes in. You said that Bernie Sanders and the left want to move things little by little to the left to slowly change the center.

I assure you that no one on the left is purposefully moving slowly, they are only moving slowly because the right is pushing back.

Those on the left that support Sanders, support justice for everyone. No matter their race, gender, gay or straight, rich or poor. The police and justice system should treat everyone fairly.

And you talked up having a small government, where they government doesn’t get involved. That small government has cost America well over a 100,000 lives. And your fear that the country is being nudged to the left has led to millions of Americans living a life, where they are terrorized by our police and justice system every day.

I urge you to prioritize the 7th noahide law. And to not consider a small government to be a good thing, after all the avoidable death in this country this year.

Regarding the nudging… Read Rules for Radicals by Saul Alinsky and blueprint is clear and logical. Also, this has been in motion for decades.
Regarding the justice for everyone. I agree.
Regarding: “The police and justice system should treat everyone fairly.” Fair is a subjective term. For me: Justice should be blind and impartial. Police should simply be the enforces of the laws we the people approve of. But these are “shoulds”, and unfortunately people are flawed and often don’t do what they should.
Regarding the Govt size. Your argument seems ironic. You’re saying the “small government has cost America well over a 100,000 lives…. and… led to millions of Americans living a life, where they are terrorized by our police and justice system every day” – So I suppose a bigger and more powerful government would have cost fewer lives and would have a system where people are not terrorized by the police or justice system? Sorry, but examples of such simply escape me. The Govt is not the solution to our problems…
Finally, I’m not sure how not eating the limb of a living animal applies, but I suppose it could make for an interesting interpretation.
I do sincerely appreciate you listening and taking the time to comment. These are discussions best done in person with love, understanding, and time for discourse.

I imagine (hope) there are also a good deal of Christian listeners to this podcast, this would be most relevant to them. There is a reference in this episode to New Testament use of books like Enoch. I happened to also listen to William Lane Craig’s Defender’s podcast where he also referenced these literary references. For Christians (or anyone really) interested in the New Testament authors’ use of psuedopigrapha as literary device, it would be worth a listen: https://www.reasonablefaith.org/podcasts/defenders-podcast-series-3/excursus-on-creation-of-life-and-biological-diversity/excursus-on-creation-of-life-and-biological-diversity-part-23/

Bonus, if you go back through the previous couple of episodes you’ll here Dr. Craig also reference some of the same passages of Sarna and Cassuto that Nahum mentions. I’m always a sucker for different sources agreeing on things 🙂
